Drop-Off Productions presents
High Up w/ Whispertown
Friday, March 30, 2018
9PM, $8.00 ADV/$12.00 DOS
Drop-Off Productions proudly presents an evening of towering, emotional soul music featuring High Up. The most talked about indie act to come out of the Omaha music scene since the band debuted sometime around 2015, High Up is the new project from sisters Christine and Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, O+S, Art in Manila, Closeness, Now It’s Overhead). The band, which includes Josh Soto (The Seen), Todd Fink (The Faint) and Matt Focht (Head of Femur, Bright Eyes) draws from a wide variety of influences- from Sam Cooke to Dead Kennedys, from Screamin Jay Hawkins to The Velvet Underground -The result is an indie “soul” musical masterpiece that gives Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas a run for their money. With a voice reminiscent of Janis Joplin’s, Christine belts out High Up’s unique flavor of golden blues in a style Joe Cocker would admire — all jerky moves and pained expressions with a little James Brown shake thrown in to make it ultra-groovy. The bands frenetic live show draws comparisons to other modern purveyors of rock ‘n’ soul, such as The Dirtbombs or King Khan and the Shrines, blending genres as (Christine) Fink throws every ounce of her body into every note of the Omaha soul band’s songs. Their debut record, “You Are Here” was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Monsters of Folk) at ARC Studios in Omaha, and is slated to release Feb. 23 on Team Love Records. Joining them on tour is LA-based Whispertown-the latest iteration of the unique vision of Morgan Meyn Nagler (songwriter, lead vocals, guitar). What was once The Whispertown 2000 has morphed into a less structured version of itself, with Nagler’s unmistakable vocals leading a revolving cast of musicians and artists. In various formations, Nagler and company garnered support slots for Jenny Lewis, The Breeders, M. Ward, Bright Eyes, She & Him, Maria Taylor, Rilo Kiley, Conor Oberst and many more. The band soon caught the attention of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, inspiring the first signing to their own Acony Records. In addition to traveling around the world playing her own music, Whispertown’s Morgan Nagler has also worked countless co-writes with artists such as HAIM (“Falling”), Kim Deal (“The Root”,”Range on Castle”), Rilo Kiley (“Dreamworld”) and the Dave Rawlings Machine (“Sweet Tooth”) to name a few. I’M A MAN, the latest from Nagler under the Whispertown moniker, is a stripped back acoustic album, set in a naturally psychedelic world, where words reveal themselves in modern mantra. The album was produced by Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova) and released on Graveface Records, marking Nagler’s return, and 3rd full length release. Additional support to be announced. This is a 21+ show at the world famous Surfside 7, Friday, March 30 – Tickets are $8 Advance/$10 Day of show and will be available online at www.surfsideseven.com, the ticketing link above and the bar.
